Moscow again welcomes Kai Huschke of Envision Spokane and the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (http://www.celdf.org/) in Spokane, as he offers a public presentation on Friday, February 1, entitled When the Law is on Their Side: What Communities are Doing Differently to Change the Game against Corporate Domination. His 7 pm talk will describe the legal background and necessity of some of the 150 community bills of rights codified by cities and counties as local “declarations of independence” from harmful corporate activities and government facilitation. On Saturday morning, February 2, between 9 am and 12:30 pm, Kai will lead a meeting of bill advancing coalition leaders through Moving from What We Can Get to What We Want for Moscow and Latah County. Together, we will explore the regulatory world and the evolution of corporate-shaped/state-supported legal doctrines, internationally enacted rights of nature, and effective, pro-active community rights and state-level organizing for critical issues in the region and state. Palouse Prairie Foundation and the White Pine Chapter of the Idaho Native Plant Society are organizing a public presentation and discussion of the proposed realignment of highway US95 between Moscow and Thorn Creek Road, and how it might affect native flora and fauna. There seem to be three disconnected conversations going on these days about climate change. One is among the scientists working on the issue, another among business, industry, and many politicians, and a third within policy and think-tank circles. Different sectors of our society seem to be miles apart on this important issue and there’s been no real progress. Have real solutions to the problem now been stalled past the point of no return? Dr. Michael Jennings, a researcher at the University of Idaho, will explore today’s climate situation from the perspective of current primary literature and data in an attempt to connect the dots. The Paradise Ridge Defense Coalition (PRDC) and its supporters invite public involvement at an informational meeting followed by site visits. Everyone is welcome to consider and discuss Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) plans to reroute U.S. Highway 95 between Thorn Creek Road and Moscow at the 1912 Center Great Room, 412 East Third Street in Moscow. From noon to 2 pm in the Great Room, community members will talk about ITD’s draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) and technical reports on three alternatives for proposed highway realignment. While presenting arguments supporting the central C-3 alternative and opposing the ITD-preferred eastern E-2 alternative, the knowledge-sharing session will encourage participant questions and insights. Between 2 and 5 pm, event organizers and participants will carpool to locations along and near the proposed C-3 and E-2 routes. Several area residents will host pertinent site visits and talks off Eid, Paradise Ridge, and Zeitler roads and Highway 95. Travelers should dress warmly and bring beverages and snacks if desired.

Chris Bolz has served as a firefighter for over 20 years for the US Forest Service, throughout the US, Canada, and Mexico. He will offer his observations on how forest fires and firefighting have changed and on the effects of global warming. Please join us for his presentation, “Life on the Front Lines: Through the Eyes of a Forest Service Firefighter” at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 23, in the Arts room of the 1912 Center, Moscow. “Eating Locally, Eating Seasonally, Eating Together”. Join us for a free community dinner featuring local foods including lentil soup, cornbread, squash, and salad on Sunday March 24, 5-6 pm at the 1912 Center, 412 E. 3rd St., Moscow. We will enjoy local foods and discuss efforts for local food sufficiency and community togetherness. There will be a brief presentation and an open microphone for those wishing to share their local food experiences. Volunteers needed and donations of local food are welcome.
