Please consider attending the Greater Pacific Northwest Regional CCL Conference, which runs from 8:30 am Saturday, March 7 through 1 pm March 8 in Seattle. The theme of this year’s conference is Fisheries, Farms, and Forests, and the lineup of speakers looks great. If you are new to CCL, this conference will provide a great introduction. There will be a 1-1/2 hour introductory workshop led by CCL’s national legislative director. Scholarships are available for anyone for whom the modest registration fee would be a burden.
 

Lecture on Geothermal Energy

Finally, don’t miss Cary Lindsey’s talk entitled “Geothermal Energy: An overview of this renewable energy resource and its place in Idaho’s energy future” Thursday (Feb. 26) at 7 pm at UI Jansen Engineering (7th and Line St.), Room 104. Cary is a doctoral candidate at the U of I, and the event is sponsored by the Palouse Environmental Sustainability Coalition and UUCP Environmental Task Force.
 

Idaho ranks as one of the top states in the nation for geothermal power generation potential. Come learn about yet another way we can meet our energy needs without frying the grand kids.

Can geothermal energy aid in mitigating climate change?  University of Idaho PhD candidate Cary Lindsey will give a talk on the “Future of Geothermal Energy” Tuesday, January 20, in the 1912 Center Fiske Room at 7:30 p.m.  She will discuss her research from Yellowstone Park and other “hot spots” as well as local geothermal projects. Brett Haverstick, Friends of Clearwater, will review a joint event in March regarding Snake River dam breaching and port dredging. We also plan to collaborate on Chris Caudill’s Salmon Restoration and the effect of the dams later in the year.

Tim Hatten, entomologist, will review the effect of neonicotinoid pesticides on our bee population, a major concern not only for farmers but for all gardeners in the Palouse. How to restrict their use locally. How we can encourage Monarchs with native northwest milkweed.

• Concurrently in Afternoon: Fostering a Courageous Climate Change Ministry (private workshop for faith leaders).

Names for this event are still tentative: “Palouse Climate Courage Kickoff” or “A Climate Change Plan for a Resilient Palouse.”

Maria L. Talero, Ph.D.

Maria Talero will be the leader for most of this weekend event. Maria Talero is a Denver-based community climate change educator and former philosophy professor who is developing an innovative approach to climate change communication, organizing and activism. Her research-based methodology draws on a paradigm called “embodied cognition” to identify the stages of transformation (for both individuals and communities) that lead to courageous and powerful climate change activism. She is a hands-on, mindful and passionate presenter and facilitator with 15 years of experience as an educator, and she currently organizes a monthly community group in Denver, Colorado called the Climate Courage Resilience Circle. She offers leadership trainings and workshops to non-profits, schools and communities of faith in Colorado. She is Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Denver. She is a 2014 NAAEE Community Climate Change Fellow as well as a board member and team leader with 350 Colorado and 350 Denver.

Changing leadership in PESC:

After next Sunday’s meeting, I am stepping down as co-chair and Brian Koepke will be stepping up. Pat Rathmann will step down as co-chair June 30. If the time and place of our meetings is an issue, that can be revised under new leadership.

At the Annual meeting of Friends of the Clearwater on November 1, PESC was honored as Outstanding Environmental Group of the Year, and Pat Rathmann and Pat Fuerst were given framed copies of the Wilderness Act 50^th poster. We are so grateful for this recognition!

Rob was honored as ‘Activist of the Year’ at the same meeting. Rob most recently led the effort to establish the Palouse Chapter of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby. The Palouse Land Trust and Palouse Environmental Sustainability Coalition are hosting the second annual trail clean up at Idler’s Rest Nature Preserve from 9am – 12 noon on June 14^th.  This lovely cedar grove is enjoyed by many area residents.  It is owned and managed by the Palouse Land Trust, which is dependent on donations from the community to maintain the Preserve, so this is a wonderful opportunity to show how much we care about these special places.    Carpoolers can meet at 8:30 at the Unitarian Church (420 E. 2^nd St., Moscow). As a thank you for all your hard work a delicious Co-op lunch will be served around 11:30.  Trish Heeken from theIdaho and Latah County Conservation Departments will be joining us to identify both the invasives and the native good guys.  Last year she found a rare plant she had never seen before in this area.  For directions or questions, email Amy Trujillo at amy.trujillo@palouselandtrust.org.  An RSVP is appreciated so we can make sure to have enough food.

Wikipedia: In Episode 6, “Winds of Change”, Ferrera reports on how public policy has supported the growth of wind and solar power in Kansas, and how the oil and gas companies, and their well-funded lobbyists and allies like the Heartland Institute and the American Legislative Exchange Council, are pushing lawmakers to reverse this. Meanwhile, Bittman discovers that extracting natural gas through fracking delays our transition to renewable energy and that fracking wells leak a large amount of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, which makes fracked natural gas as dirty as, or dirtier than, burning coal.

Oppose Special Interest Truck Safety Exemptions in Fiscal Year 2015 Appropriations Bill

Dear Chairman Rogers and Ranking Member Lowey:

As representatives of safety, law enforcement, labor, environment, consumer, and public health organizations, we are united in opposing Section 125 of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year (FY) 2015. This section, which carves out special interest exemptions from federal truck size and weight limits for Idaho, Mississippi and Wisconsin, has no place in an appropriations bill. These riders have not been subject to any public scrutiny, committee hearings, or adequate safety review and cost/benefit analysis.  Every minute and a half of every day, there is a large truck crash. We urge you to remove this section and reject any similar amendments which may be introduced.

Fossil Fuel Divestment TOMORROW (Friday 4/ 18)at WSU, 3 pm, room 220 CUE (Smith Center for Undergraduate Education):

“People of conscience need to break their ties with corporations financing the injustice of climate change.” (South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu). We need an apartheid-style boycott to save the planet.  Trillium Asset Management was active in the successful South African divestment campaign of the 80s. Now they are working with the “Fossil Fuel Free” campaign of 350.org which is encouraging universities, businesses and individuals to divest from companies in the fossil fuel industry. Will Lana of Trillium will present ‘Fossil Fuel Investment and Divestment: Choices for a Responsible Investor’. He will provide socially responsible information for people and institutions to move their personal investments out of coal, oil and gas companies and about reinvesting in companies that are related to clean energy and a more sustainable economy. Sponsored by WSU Environmental Science Club and the Palouse Environmental Sustainability Coalition. Born into the environmental movement, her father was the late Robert Hunter, first president of Greenpeace and her mother, Bobbi Hunter, the first woman to save a whale by blocking a harpoonist at sea. For nearly a decade Emily has reported from the frontlines of global environmental campaigns, from the Sea Shepherd ships saving save whales in Antarctica to the rainforest of Borneo waging a media battle against the palm oil industry.

WSU Earth Day Fair, Tuesday April 22, 11am-2pm–Terrell Mall

Please come celebrate all that Earth provides on April 22^nd at the biggest Earth Day Fair ever on WashingtonState University’s Terrell Mall. This year there will be at least 25 Washington and Idaho community groups and WSU student groups that are involved in the sustainability of Earth tabling on The Mall. In addition to all the conscious groups that will be tabling and informing students, faculty, staff, and the public community of their sustainability-related mission, there will be an open-microphone for anyone to freely speak about the environment, other open-mic entertainment, and free “Earth Week 2014”: sustainable coffee mugs, magnets, t-shirts, and drawstring bags for visiting some of the Earth Day Fair group tables and learning about what they are all about. There will be many opportunities to get involved in the conservation, preservation, and restoration of Earth through the 25 groups that will be there.  The WSU Earth Day Fair is sponsored by the ASWSU Environmental Sustainability Alliance and WSU Environmental Science Club. We truly hope to see there!

Markese Bryant Tues. 4/22 7pm CUB Auditorium

Markese W. Bryant is a 2012 Echoing Green Black Male Achievement Fellow. In 2010, Markese was selected as a winner in a nationwide business plan competition called “Energy, Economy and Innovation” at Morehouse College. After graduation, Markese joined the Green For All to build and manage the College Ambassador Program, which focused on fostering young, green-economy champions at fifteen Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Through this program, Markese played an integral role in organizing the largest delegation of African American college students to attend any Power Shift conference to date. Markese also partnered with Green For All to release a music video entitled “The Dream Reborn”, which garnered over 32,000 views on youtube.com and won 2nd place in the Environmental Protection Agency nationwide video contest. Markese will be coming to WSU to talk about diversifying the sustainability movement and making environmental education available to everyone regardless of their background. Wednesday April 30 DamNation at Kenworthy:
On Wednesday April 30, FOC and Save Our Wild Salmon are co-sponsoring the documentary DamNation, which takes a critical look at the dam building era of the 20th Century and the efforts to decommission dams and recover native fish and aquatic ecosystems in the 21st Century. The film starts 7 pm at the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre,508 S. Main Street, Moscow. Watch the trailer.
